Sustainable Dairy Goat Initiative (SDGI) is a student run organization at The University of Texas. We are dedicated to improving lives domestically by providing dairy goats to low income families, specifically in colonia areas in the southern part of Texas. Our mission is to fight poverty one goat at a time.
We have chosen goats because a family can survive on and sell their by-products. Additionally, goats need less land than cows , while they significantly help improve a family’s life. Goats are easy to take care of in this geographic area because they are browsers who thrive off the brush that is native to the Valley. We also donate Prickly Pear Cacti to these families. The cacti grow easily and thrive in the harsh climate. Additionally, almost every part of the cacti plant is edible and doubles as roughage for the goats. We believe that these two resources will prove invaluable for these families that rely on agriculture to survive.
This organization is currently centered in Texas with four operating branches (The University of Texas, Texas A&M University, Texas State University, & Texas Christian University). Each branch is governed by students and has a director in charge of raising funds for the cause.
